Intro/Attention: We continue our series through 1 Thessalonians entitled, The Irresistible Church. Can you imagine a church so unified and in tune with the Holy Spirit, that its influence would be irresistible? I pray that we will be that kind of church. Tonight, from 1 Thessalonians 2:1-6, I'm preaching on, A Church That Moves the World. READ TEXT
*G.K. Chesterton said, ''We do not want, as the newspapers say, a church that will move with the world. We want a church that will move the world.'' That is what happened with that first century church. They were moving the world. They were making a difference. They were having an impact on society and were making an indelible impression on everyone around them. They did not blend in and go unnoticed by the massed. They dug in their heels and put their shoulder to wheel of history and tried to redirect its future path. They took a stand for Christ. They took a stand for faith.*
We do not need to assume it was somehow easier for them back than it is for us today. People have not changed that much through the years. Their vices, desires, rebellion and resistance to God have been evident since the beginning and were evident in Paul's day. They are evident in our day as well. Our task is no more difficult than theirs was. Our task is no less important than theirs was. Our task is not different than theirs was. The church, in every age, has been called to be salt and light. The church, in every age, has the same mission. Salt and light both change the environment in which they are introduced.
Why did they have such an enormous impact? Was the gospel somehow more powerful and potent then than it is now? Did the light of the gospel have a super-charge in the first century that has begun to wear down through the ages? NO! They knew their purpose and were completely convinced of their purpose.
