Intro/Attention: Tonight, we return to our series through the book of 1 Thessalonians entitled, The Irresistible Church. I have thoroughly enjoyed our study in this NT book and I hope you have as well. I am challenged and encouraged as I learn more about these folks in Thessalonica. Our study this evening is in 1 Thessalonians 2:13-20 and I'm preaching on this subject, Growing Pains. READ TEXT -- PRAY

*How many of you had growing pains when you were growing up? Just in the last year or so, we took Judd to the doctor because of the persistent pain he was having in his knees. We thought it might be sports related - he plays running back and linebacker on the football team and catcher on the baseball team. But, the doctor did an x-ray and told us it's just ''growing pains.''*

*In truth, growth is painful. It is amazing to think about how much change has to take place for us to grow from a newborn to a full-grown adult. We start out at about 20 inches tall and then the average American adult grows to 5 feet 4 ½ inches tall (that's 64 ½ inches). And that's over three times bigger than we started. A 7 foot tall man is 84 inches tall, which is four times bigger than he started. Growing spiritually can also be painful. When we first become Christians, we are like newborns, and there is a lot of growth that must take place before we will be full-grown spiritual adults. Unfortunately, spiritual growth can be stunted. Spiritual growth often comes in spurts, but is best when it happens over the long haul. *
