Intro/Attention: Tonight, we continue our study through the NT book of 1 Thessalonians. I have entitled this study; The Irresistible Church because the people of Thessalonica provide an example of a church that loves the Lord, cares for one another, and impacts its community. That's the way church ought to be.

We come to 1 Thessalonians 3 in our study and we'll look at the entire chapter, 13 verses, this evening. Tonight's message is entitled, Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus. READ TEXT -- PRAY

*I remember learning the hymn, Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus, as a little boy right here at Second Baptist Church. I always thought it was funny when Bro. Gary asked us to sing the song because he would say, ''Stand and sing, Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus.'' But once, there was a Sunday night, or maybe a Sunday morning, when we sat down to sing a hymn. Guess which one we sang? You guessed it; Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus. I wasn't sure whether to stay seated or stand up when we were singing the song. They hymn simply encourages us to stand up to the world, to stand up for what's right, and to stand up for Jesus.* Here, Paul encourages the Thessalonian believers to stand firm in their faith, to stand against false teachers, and to stand up for Jesus. He's challenging them to take a stand!

Before a child can walk, he must learn to stand. Usually the father and mother teach the child to stand and then to walk. Paul was ''spiritual parent'' to these believers, but he had been forced to leave Thessalonica. How, then, could he help these young Christians learn to stand in the trials of life?

In the first two chapters, Paul explained how the church was born and nurtured. Now he dealt with the next step in maturity: how the church was to stand. The key word in this chapter is ''establish'' (2 and 13). The key thought is expressed in 1 Thessalonians 3:8: ''For now ...
