1 Thessalonians 4:9-12
Intro/Attention:We have been studying verse by verse through the New Testament book of 1 Thessalonians on Sunday evenings in a series I have entitled, The Irresistible Church. Tonight, we come to 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12. We saw last week what it means to walk in a way that pleases the Lord. And tonight, we will study what it means to have A Godly Life in a Wicked World. READ TEXT - PRAY
*There's a phrase used in verse 10 that is found first in verse 1. Paul uses the words ''more and more.'' Some translations say, ''excel still more.'' In other words, if there's something you should be good at, if there's something you should excel at, it should be this. It should be living as godly Christians in a wicked world. If you could excel at one thing, what would it be? Would it be academics, athletics, music, video games, business, finances? If you could pick one thing to ''excel'' at in the life, what would that one thing be? But if you think about it, one thing we must excel in to be effective followers of Jesus is ''love.'' In fact, this is the theme of these verses. The way we follow Christ in a world of darkness is to love God, love one another, and love others the way God has called us to. That's something we should ''excel'' in.*
We live in a wicked world. I don't have to tell you that and I certainly shouldn't have to prove it. Crime, murder, abortion, sexual immorality, crumbling social norms - our world is a wicked and vile place. We shouldn't be surprised by this fact. We can be heartbroken about it, but we shouldn't be shocked. Jesus told His followers in Matthew 10:16, ''Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.'' (ON SCREEN)
So, we need to be wise, careful, sensible, and righteous in the midst of a chaotic, crazy, wicked, and dangerous world. Does anyone else have problem ...
