INTRODUCTION: Today I want to talk about God's saving grace as the double cure for sin. If you grew up in the church then you probably sang a hymn entitled ''Rock of Ages'' with these lyrics: ''Be of sin the double cure; cleanse me from its GUILT and POWER.'' What's this about a ''double cure?'' It's a reference to the fact that sin results in a DOUBLE curse upon mankind. God's grace must deal with each part of that double curse - and it does - but in different ways.
I. SIN IS A DOUBLE CURSE
Sin is a problem for two reasons.
EXAMPLE: Let's say you run a stop sign. Do you know the difference between a rolling stop and a full stop? The difference is about $150. So you run a stop sign. And not only do you run a stop sign but there is a police officer sitting right there at the corner watching you do it. So you're busted for running the stop sign. In addition, as a result of running the stop sign you're involved in a car accident in which your leg is broken. You now have two problems - the broken law - and the broken leg. This is a legal problem. This is a medical problem. This problem calls for a lawyer. This problem calls for a doctor.
Likewise, sin, the breaking of God's law results in two distinct problems.
SIN MAKES US GUILTY
Ja.2:10 ''For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.''
I Jn.3:4 ''Sin is lawlessness''
First, sin makes you guilty in the sense that having broken God's law. The law of God also has penalties. As a law-breaker you come under God's LEGAL condemnation.
Romans 6:23 ''The wages of sin is death.''
