Who Am I? (1 of 4)
Series: Making Church Safe
Scott Maze
Titus 1:1-4
Series Introduction
Today launches a new series, Titus: Making Church Safe. The New Testament book of Titus is among the shortest books included in the New Testament. The Apostle Paul, a leader among early Christians, writes this book to a young church leader named Titus. Paul had asked Titus to stay on the island of Crete and bring order from chaos in the church there (Titus 1:5). Today, Crete is the largest of the Greek islands in the Mediterranean Sea, boasting 300 days of sunshine and 25 million olive trees. It continues to be a favorite spot for European vacationers despite Greece's economic woes.
The Gospel got to Crete early, as individuals from this small 150-mile long island were present when Peter the first Christian sermon in Jerusalem (Acts 2:10). Church history tells us that Titus was buried on the island after giving much of his life to the church located there. Titus is included in a section of New Testament books called the Pastoral Letters. The Pastoral Letters include 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and our Titus as all three deal with the practical issues of making churches healthy.
Throughout this small book we'll discover a Church is a people where love is found, the Word of God is the final umpire and the church's leaders are shepherds. As we explore the words of this small book, we'll discover that the message to Titus contains theologically rich phrases that display God's divine ordering of every aspect of our lives. Working from epicenter of our lives as well as the universe, we'll discover that the cross of Jesus Christ impacts our homes, our church, and even how we view our world. That is, the gospel impacts our very identity. Join me in seeing how to Making Church Safe by exploring verse and every word of this book.
