Scripture: Psalm 92

A Grateful Heart
Stephen Whitney
Psalm 92

Thanksgiving Day dates back to 1623 three years after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth when governor William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving after a winter of great suffering.

His proclamation read: ''Insomuch as the great Father has given us this year an abundant harvest of Indian corn, wheat, peas, beans, squashes and garden vegetables and has made the forests to abound with game and the sea with fish . . . has spared us from pestilence and disease, has granted us freedom to worship God according to the dictates of our own conscience.

Now, I, your magistrate, do proclaim that all ye Pilgrims do gather at ye meeting house between the hours of 9 and 12 on Thursday November 29, 1623 . . . there to listen to the ye pastor and render
thanksgiving to Almighty God for all his blessings.''

Thanksgiving acknowledges God has provided for our needs. The classic thanksgiving hymn, Come, Ye Thankful People Come expresses the truth that God provides for our needs: Come, ye thankful people come, raise the song of harvest home: All is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin; God our Maker, doth provide for our wants to be supplied.

The Hebrew words thanks (114x) and thanksgiving (32x) are synonyms which mean: to offer praise to God. Psalm 95:2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise.

The nation of Israel was encouraged to thank God for his blessings and goodness to them each week when they came to worship.

Title - A psalm for the Sabbath day This psalm was sung as part of their weekly worship. They had the last day of the week set apart to worship God. It is important to set aside time each week to worship God because it is easy to forget what he has done for us.
