Sam Butcher was born in Jackson, Michigan and he is the third of five children born to very poor parents. When he was a little boy his parents migrated west, settling in Redding, CA. His mom noticed early on that her middle child had talent, and he spent his days drawing at the kitchen table.

His artistry earned him a college scholarship and after graduation he married another art student. Then, he accepted a position with Child Evangelism Fellowship and soon his illustrations appeared on TV. His work became so popular that he left CEF, moved his family to Missouri, and began to build his dream. In 1989 he completed the Precious Moments Chapel, located between Joplin and Carthage, MO.
