Our Sin-Bearer
Stephen Whitney
I Peter 2:24
In the OT when someone sinned they were to bring a lamb to the priest and he would offer it for a sacrifice on their behalf. The lamb died in the place of the person who sinned so they were forgiven of their sin against God.
Leviticus 4:29 If a person sins unintentionally . . . he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and kill the sin offering.
For the people the lamb carried the punishment for their sins. In other words: the lamb was their sin-bearer so they did not have to pay the penalty themselves.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned - every one - to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him (Christ) the iniquity of us all. Christ carried the guilt of our sins on himself.
PHYSICAL SUFFERING - bore our sins Personal He himself (KJB own self) - the reflexive pronoun puts the emphasis on Christ alone who died so we could be forgiven. There was no one else who could die for us to be forgiven.
John Calvin - ''Under the Law, the sinner, so that he might be released from guilt, substituted a victim in his own place; so Christ took on himself the curse due to our sins, that he might atone (reconcile) for them before God.''
In Christ alone my hope is found he is my light, my strength, my song . . . Literal Bore (KJB bare) - Gk. to carry meaning to take upon yourself. Luke 10:34 The good Samaritan put the man who had been beaten up on his own donkey and brought him to an inn.
