John 21:1-25

Introduction: It's hard to believe it's been this long, but almost 20 years ago the movie Cast Away came out, featuring Tom Hanks. I imagine most of you saw that movie, it grossed almost $430 million worldwide. It's the story of a man whose plane crashes and finds himself completely alone on a deserted island. The movie is largely about his adaptation to life all alone and his quest to survive. Over four years he's on this island. But to me the most interesting and compelling part of that movie is when he is actually rescued and returns home. I mean I don't know about you but I had figured that once he was rescued, he'd be reunited with his fiancé and live happily ever after. Cue the credits, right?

But that's not what happens. He returns to his home in Tennessee to find that life has moved on without him. His fiancé married another man and has a child (I mean just an aside, was it just me or did Helen Hunt's character seemed to have moved on pretty quickly...I mean she's got a three-year-old kid). Anyway, my point is that having been through this traumatic, prolonged event in life, you find that Tom Hanks's character can't just get back to normal. He can't return to his old life. Everything has changed. There's one scene even near the end where he's in some hotel sleeping on the hard floor, because after four years on this deserted island he can't sleep in a bed any longer. He's been through some life-changing and now he finds himself not knowing what's next.

In John 21 we find the disciples in a very similar situation. For three years they've been following Jesus, listening to Him, learning from Him, watching Him do inexplicable things. Just a week ago they watched him get arrested, beaten, and crucified, but then He rose from the dead! He appeared to them; He ate with them. But then He left. And I think were we to put ourselves in their shoes, we've got to imagine they ...
