John 18:1-40
Introduction: Think back to an ideal or especially happy and wonderful period of time in your life. It doesn't have to be perfect, but you know one of those times in life, an extended time whether a couple of months or years, that when you sit here this morning and look back on it a smile, a happy sigh, comes to you. You have it? For me it's easy to look back on my four years in Charlottesville at the University of Virginia in that way. Those weren't four perfect years, there were some hard times in there, but I remember when I graduated thinking, 'Patrick, this has been a wonderful four years. You really got out of the college experience all that one could get and enjoy.'
The couple of years after college, thus, were a little hard for me. I missed school and I missed that time in my life. Even after getting married and starting to have kids I looked back on that time with fondness and continue to do today. But, I would never try to move my family to Charlottesville. I'd never want to try to recreate that time in life again because, frankly, it'd be impossible. Right? It wasn't just the place, but it was the time and the people. Even me, I've changed a lot in fifteen years; I'm not the same person I was then.
Now, of course, please don't misunderstand me this morning, I really wouldn't prefer my college years over my life today. My life today is so much richer and fuller and more meaningful than it was then. You know what I'm saying, though. My point is that you can't recreate the past. You can't replicate the magic of a first kiss, the butterflies of a wedding day, the awe of seeing your favorite movie for the first time. If you're Brian Adams, you can't go back to the Summer of '69. We all know that whatever Edenic paradise of life you remember most fondly is in the past and is over.
But what John has been helping us to see throughout his gospel is that true Eden is n ...
