The phrase ''In God we trust'' was originally written in the ''The Star-Spangled Banner'' during the war of 1812. The fourth stanza included the phrase, ''and this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'''

Reverend Watkinson, in a letter dated November 13, 1861, petitioned the Treasury Department to add a statement recognizing ''Almighty God in some form in our coins.'' At least part of the motivation was to declare that God was on the side of the Union during the Civil War. It is now printed on all of our money.

It is easy to say ''In God we trust,'' but what does it mean to trust in God? It is to acknowledge that we are dependent upon him because he is sovereign over everything that happens in our lives.

Psalm 34:8 Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord. Trust in - Heb. to hide or take refuge in. It suggests a secret place where we are safe and secure.

When we are exhausted by our efforts, when we are bewildered by our problems, when we are wounded by our friends or when we are surrounded by our foes, we can find security in God.

Background I Samuel 21:12-13 David fled from Saul who was trying to kill him and stayed in the Philistine city of Gath which was the hometown of Goliath. When the people recognized David, he was afraid of what they might now do to him.

In spite of the fact that David was a warrior with great courage and skill, there were times when he was afraid for his life.
