Faith Tried and Proved
Stephen Whitney
I Peter 1:6-7
A young boy was fascinated to see the stirring of life in a cocoon. The moth inside was struggling to free itself, but the process was slow and tedious. Thinking he would help the moth, he slit the cocoon with his pocketknife and the insect emerged freely.
But it had none of the beautiful color he had expected, it couldn't fly and it soon died. The boy later learned that a moth's struggle to free itself from the cocoon is a necessary part of its development and that the process stimulates body fluids that give luster and strength to its wings so it can fly.
God tests our faith to prove that it is real and strengthen it. God promised Abraham and Sarah they would be a great nation, but they didn't have even one child. They waited for 25 years and God blessed them with a son in their old age.
When Isaac was a teen-ager God asked Abraham to sacrifice him. Genesis 22:1-2 God tested Abraham and said to him, ''Abraham . . . take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah and offer him there as a burnt offering.
Alexander Whyte (d. 1921) was a Scottish minister and professor - ''His only son is the one and only instrument and chosen vessel of all God's remaining promises to him.''
Abraham does what the Lord asks him to do, but before he sacrifices him the Lord tells him to stop because he has clearly demonstrated that he loves God even more than his only son.
For the Christian the difficulties and trials of life prove that our faith is real as we stand firm and strengthen our faith in God as we depend upon his promises.
1. God tests our faith to prove that it is real. 2. God tests our faith to strengthen it.
VARIOUS TRIALS :6 In this - refers to the salvation instead of punishment believers will experience when Jesus Christ returns (:5).
Rejoice - Gk. lit. to jump for joy (:8 rejoice with joy) James 1:2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials.
