We're in a series called Unshakable Hope and it's based on a single verse from the Bible recorded in Peter's second letter:
1:4 God has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature.
This is week No. 7 and today's promise is, ''Christ Is Praying for You.'' Paul writes (Romans 8:34), ''Christ is at the right hand of God, interceding for you.'' The Living Bible says, ''Christ is sitting at the place of highest honor next to God, pleading for us in heaven.''
Back in 2014 we were one of thirty-three beta-churches that worked in conjunction with the Oak Hills Church in San Antonio on a series called ''Believe.'' We spent the first half of that series discovering what God wants us to believe, and the second half focused on the practices that reinforce what we believe.
Randy Frazee put together a message board for all the pastors and one morning each week all the pastors shared illustrations and outlines with each other. One of those pastors was a guy named Rick who always had a story to tell.
One day he wrote, ''Learning to pray is like learning to go to the gym.'' Rick told us that he weighed a whopping 135 pounds! A friend asked him to sign up for weightlifting and his wife thought a little muscle mass would be nice on his frame.
The first day in the gym they had him start with the bench press. If you lift weights you already know the bar weighs 45 lbs. Rick said he started exercising by lifting the bar - and yes, he heard the snickers all over the gym! After five reps he was panting and perspiring!
Then he looked across the room and he saw three guys with three 45-lb plates on each side of the bar! That's 315 pounds! (Slightly more than what I can lift) Rick said their arms were as big as hi ...
