WAS YOUR CHARACTER REPRESENTED AT THE CROSS?
MATTHEW 27: 33 - 37
JESUS CHRIST's execution was attended by a variety of people.
Let's visit the scene of the crucifixion and see if there is a
character there who is representative of you.
Matthew said, "...sitting down they watched Him there" (27:36).
Can you imagine sitting and watching Christ die? The word
translated "watched" literally means "guarded". They thought
they were guarding Him. In reality, He was guarding them.
I.THE CROSS DIRECTS
It is God's plus sign showing the way to Heaven. It directs our
attention to the loving God.
"Greater love hath no man than this..." (John 15:13).
"He saved others; himself he cannot save..." (Vs. 42).
He could have called 72,000 angels. In the O.T. just one angel
is reputed to have killed 185,000 people. Thus, in the moment of
Christ's derision Christ had at His disposal a kill power of
13,320,000,000. It was not that He could not save Himself. It
was that He would not save Himself. He was there as a voluntary
self-sacrifice.
II.THE CROSS DIVIDES
At the cross the soldiers divided His belongings and gambled
over them. He divided the soldiers.
The division made by the cross is dramatically illustrated by
the 2 thieves crucified with Him. In derision, one cried, "Save
yourself and us." The other prayed, "Lord, remember me when you
come into your kingdom." READ: Luke 23: 39-43.
Three crosses: On one a man dying in sin, on another one dying
to sin and on the third one dying for sin. Which represents you?
Jesus said, "He that is not with me is against me" (Matt.
12:20).
