Children and teenagers, despite their sharp minds and seemingly endless intellectual potential, are at a severe disadvantage in their stage of life. They still carry a great deal of dumb when compared to most adults because they lack something we have...experience over time. We've all learned a lot through the years. One reason is simple, we have been around a lot longer. Another reason is that we had our own rather large cache of dumb stored away when we were younger, and we foolishly acted on it and paid the price. (Unfortunately for me that bag of dumb is not empty yet)!

We learned some hard lessons because of our own stupidity and lack of experience. We would like to keep others from doing the same. Experience is a wonderful and merciless teacher. It, often in a cruel way, reveals our lack of experience as well as our shallow and flawed thinking.

I remember going to one of my first church camps/youth retreats as a middle schooler. Our little church rented a couple of cabins in the North Georgia mountains, one for the girls and one for the guys. In addition to some great Bible studies we were going to spend time swimming and hiking. I don't know if mom and dad let me pack myself or if I just slipped them in but I, in my infinite wisdom and vast profundity of mountaineering experience, decided that some extra strong grip from my shoes would be needed in those hills. So, I took what I thought to be the grippiest pair of shoes I owned, my baseball cleats with the hard-molded spikes. I knew with every ounce of my being they were going to turn me into a mountain goat, mom said I lived and ate like one, might as well climb mountains like one.

Well, as you have already surmised, my plan was not well thought out. Molded spikes don't grip rocks very well, especially wet rocks leading to a waterfall. I spent more time on my non-walking body parts than I did my walking body parts. What w ...
