The Lost Son (3 of 4)
Series: The Lost
Jim Perdue
Luke 15:11-24
Intro/Attention: Today, we continue our series entitled Lost with the story that I believe is the climax of the Luke 15. In fact, this sermon is the climax of this series. We have seen the story of the lost sheep, the story of the lost coin and today we see the story of the lost son.
Remember, each story is the same but different. Each story is about something lost but the value of that which is lost increases as the chapter continues. Also, there is one major theme that this chapter teaches us: God loves the lost and actively seeks to save them.
Through all of these parables we see the value of one lost soul; that's a soul that Jesus died for!
*Before we continue, I want to point out that there are four attitudes that you can have toward the lost:
You can hate them
You can be indifferent
You can welcome them when they come to you
You can seek them out and bring them to Jesus
We must be a church and a people that love the lost and actively seek to reach them!*
Here in this passage, we see the danger of sin and the beauty of grace. The uglier sin is, the more beautiful grace is. The darker the stain of sin, the brighter the radiance of God's grace! READ Luke 15:11-24
Sin can damage relationships: 11-12
Explanation
Think about it, this was a humiliating request from the son, ''give me the share of the estate that falls to me...'' (12) Imagine this well-known and wealthy family that had a ''rift.'' All of a sudden, things weren't going so well on this beautiful estate with the father and his two sons. Something was wrong.
What a damaging request. This selfish son basically says to his father, give me what would be mine once you're dead. Or, in other words, I wish you were dead!
He was willing to leave his father, his family and his friends, all for a sinful season of pleasure! He was willing to leave it all behind to go spend money on ''loose living.' ...
