As you prepare for this service, spend much time in prayer. There is no greater loss for a parent then when their child dies. You will need to listen more than you talk. You will need to show unbelievable grace, mercy and patience with the parents and family.

This service can be molded to fit the needs of the family. Make it personal. Some of the prayers below can be changed to fit the needs that you as the pastor feel fit more appropriately. I have put brackets where you could insert a name. This service is designed to have more words of Scripture than your words. This should not be a long service.

Ask the family if there is any special Scripture they would like to be read as well.

Scripture Reading
Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

The Eternal God is our refuge, and underneath are His everlasting arms.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, it was your Son who took the little children into his arms and blessed them. Give us grace, we ask, to entrust this [child] to Your never-failing care and love. While we may mourn the loss of this precious [child], we have full assurance that you have received them with grace and mercy.

Help us today, O Lord God Almighty, to believe the holy words of your Scripture that give us hope in our time of distress. Comfort our hearts and give us peace through your Son Jesus Christ. Amen.
