Following Jesus Together
Brian Fletcher
Acts 2:37-47
Intro: Things that are way more fun to do together...Road trips, games like duck duck goose, football, going out to dinner, having a party, and my personal favorite making a baby.
Theme: We are in the middle of a series on Following Jesus. We started off a couple of weeks ago understanding that a follower of Jesus is united to Him and we discussed what this union in Christ looks like. It is an inward, enduring, personal, communion that we have with Christ. Being united to Christ in this inseparable bond is the foundation for our discipleship.
Union with Christ gives us the power and encouragement to follow Jesus.
Last week Andrew preached about how we are to follow Jesus in our everyday, ordinary lives. And this week we are going to talk about how following Jesus and being his disciple means being part of a Community.
Let's take a look at Acts 2:37-47 to see what was happening in the early church and how it applies to us today. This passage comes right on the heels of Peter preaching a sermon to a large crowd during Pentecost.
The first thing I want you to see from this passage is how the gospel transformed the lives of those who were converted. The good deeds followed the impact the gospel had on these men and women. Peter did not give them a list of good deeds for them to do first, he gave them the gospel that transformed their hearts first. It's from a changed heart that we go out and live life to the glory of God. And only the gospel of repentance and belief in Jesus, who forgives our sins and gives us His Holy Spirit are we able to follow Jesus and be his disciple.
The second thing and what we are going to zero in on today is that being a disciple of Jesus and following Him is not individualistic and personal in the sense that we just keep our relationship with Jesus to ourselves and avoid contact with others. The New Testament is very clear in how it describes the disciple.
