Have you ever started something, a new project, a new career or maybe just a new book and thought ''this should be easy and exciting'' only to discover it was not easy but challenging and more than just a little bit frustrating?
- Maybe some of you had that thought, ''this should be easy and exciting,'' as you stood at the altar with the love of your life saying, ''I do'' for the rest of your life only to find out it was not so easy and a lot more work than you first imagined.
- Maybe some of you had that thought when you brought that chubby little cherub that God had blessed you with home from the hospital. They were so small, so cute and so perfect. It was going to be easy because your child was different from every other child that had ever been born, they were yours, but you soon discovered there was nothing easy about caring for a baby and raising a child. It was not easy but extremely challenging and more than just a little frustrating.
Some of us may have had the thought, ''this is going to be easy,'' when we initially came to faith in Christ and experienced the great joy of being released from our sins and made alive in Christ. Instead, we found things were not always smooth or easy. Being a follower of Christ in no way guaranteed that we would sail through life on glassy seas. When we came to faith in Christ we did not enter a problem free, temptation free, tragedy free, trial free or pain free zone.
Instead, we stepped into a war zone where we are continually fighting:
- The old man. Who we used to be. Even though we've been made new, we still carry the residue of old habits and thoughts. Those thoughts and habits run deeper than we ever imagined, and it takes more time than we thought necessary to flush them out of our spiritual bloodstream. Until the day we die, we will be in a battle to overcome and distance ourselves from who we were before Christ.
