Finishing Well (3 of 3)
Series: All In!
Tony Thomas
2 Timothy 4:1-8
Paul wrote thirteen letters and 2 Timothy is his last. In chapter 1, Timothy is instructed to guard the Gospel. In chapter 2, he is urged to endure hardship. In chapter 3, he is warned to be faithful in difficult times. And in chapter 4, Paul tells Timothy to finish well.
2 Timothy 4:
6 The time for my departure is near. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
Our church is now 54 years old, and it's been 54 years of one change after another. Currently, we have entered a season of change, and my responsibility is leading us through the changes.
Our youth minister and children's minister resigned in June. But, Janis Evans picked up most of that load and Bill Parr and Terri Simpson are assisting her. Duane has temporarily added Escape to his plate and Payton Evans has been assisting him. In the meantime, we are searching for a new youth minister.
But ... there are a few more personnel changes in the not so distant future. Steve Wilke began his ministry with us in 1992 which means he's been with us for 26 years! And in the next 12-16 months he's going to retire. But ... he'd like to work part-time, and that's a best-case-scenario for us!
I'm only one year younger than Steve, so I'm going to use a number I haven't used publicly until now: I'm 64-years-old, and before I retire, I'd like to hire Steve's replacement, oversee the first phase of relocation to Walnut Creek, and if my health remains strong I want to preach for another eight years.
But - I'll tell you what I tell the elders every fall: If you think I'm no longer effective, just say the word. I'll leave quickly and quietly because I don't want to overstay my welcome. I have too much respect for our elders ... and I've watched others hang on too long.
Have you ever heard of the ''Caleb syndrome?'' When Caleb was 85 years of age he told Moses that he felt like a 40-year-old ...
