I'm Going Public!

Matthew 28:19
I love services that include baptisms. Baptism is one of the most central and important steps of our faith journey that we see biblically.
For over two thousand years, followers of Jesus have been getting baptized...
Baptism not only links us historically with the early church, but even earlier in the Old Testament, as we see that God has used water to effect miracles and illustrate spiritual truths....
We see that in the story of Noah and referenced in 1 Peter 3:20-21
1 Peter 3:20-21 (NASB95)
20who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.
21Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you-not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience-through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
We also see that the parting of the Red Sea in the deliverance of Israel from Egypt...through the waters they were not only rescued but regained their identity as God's people, God's nation...
1 Corinthians 10:1-2 (NASB95)
1For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea;
2and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
We see in 2 Kings the story of Naaman, who had leprosy...Elisha the prophet instructed him to wash in the Jordan river 7 times...And he became clean...Leprosy was real, but is also a picture of sin...
Chuck Colson points out:
''Most Westerners take baptism for granted, but for many in the world the act requires immense courage. In countries like Nepal it once meant imprisonment. For Soviet or Chinese or Eastern bloc believers, it was like signing their own death warrant.''¹
