Matthew 5:1-3 (NASB95) 1 When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. 2 He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying, 3 ''Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Started last week on the beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount...

The beatitudes, in essence is Jesus teaching a value system that is counterculture...

True values will find an expression in behavior...(value of eating right? Debt-free?)

''Blessed are''

Speaks of the ongoing condition of approval, fulfillment, contentment, joy that is possible by the indwelling of God inside us...(the Kingdom of God is inside you, greater is He that is IN you...)

Expound on ''ongoing''...Are...in contrast to ''I was blessed once last week''...''hoping for a blessing'' this week...

There are events that we can point to and say ''I was blessed by that'' but ultimately what Jesus is speaking of is an ongoing condition of life, a continuing flow of life that we can say ''I am blessed''....

It's ok to want to be blessed! It's ok to pursue the blessing of God! It means we possess the characteristics of Jesus, and the flow of the Kingdom of God is within us!

Outside of God, in our culture there is a relentless pursuit of people trying to find happiness...trying to find contentment...trying to find peace, joy, hope...

They try to find it in material stuff...try to find it in hobbies...try to find it in geographical location....try to find it in relationships on earth...trying to figure out how to appease this void in life that can ONLY be filled with the ''blessed are'' that God has designed us to receive!

Jesus in His first sermon is laying it out for us! It's the manual, the handbook, the list!
