INTRODUCTION: There is a plaque at the beginning of the Appalachian Trail atop Springer Mountain in North Georgia. The plaque reads: ''Remote for detachment, narrow for chosen company, winding for leisure, lonely for contemplation, it beckons not merely north and south, but upward to the body, mind and soul of man.'' I wanted to stand beside the plaque and read it; a true ''mountain-top'' experience. In fact, I've always thought I would like to hike the entire Appalachian Trail all the way through. The Appalachian Trail is 2,150 miles long stretching along the spine of the Appalachian Mountains from Georgia to Maine. It takes approximately four months to hike straight through from one end to the other. I think I could do that, don't you? I'm in pretty good shape. A few years ago Tami and I were on vacation in north Georgia at Amicalola Falls. At Amicalola Falls is an eight-mile approach trail straight up Springer Mountain to the start of the Appalachian Trail. It's not the Appalachian Trail, mind you; it's the APPROACH trail to the start of the Appalachian Trail. My good friend, Tim Collins, had challenged me to hike the approach trail and have my picture taken beside the plaque. So, I asked Tami to give me about four hours to hike the eight miles and then drive our car to the top of Springer Mountain to pick me up. Because of the steep ascent it actually took me closer to SIX hours to get to the top. I thought I was well prepared with my granola bars, anti-bacterial hand gel, insect repellent, and four water bottles. What I hadn't counted on was a record heat wave that day. My four water bottles weren't nearly enough. By the time I made it to the plaque at the top I was pretty well dehydrated.
