Peace (3 of 3)
Series: Faith on the Run
Steve Jones
1 Samuel 24
INTRODUCTION: Let's take a test. Let's review what we've covered in the last two messages.
1) Who was the first king of Israel?
2) Who was running for his life from the first king of Israel?
3) What was the name of the Saul's son who helped David find strength in the desert?
4) Approximately how many years was David on the run from Saul?
5) What prophet anointed both Saul and David?
Everybody loves a test, right? Wrong. But sometimes they're necessary. Our friend David is on the run and during this time-period he's being tested by God. When we last left David, he was in the desert wilderness of Ziph hiding from Saul. It was there that he learned to trust in the strength of God. From Ziph David went through the desert of Maon to the desert of En Gedi and that's where we're going to pick up his story. In the desert of En Gedi David is tested by God in a powerful way and he passes the test. When you're in the desert. When you're on the run - you are being tested.
James 1:12 ''God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation.''
I Peter 4:12 ''Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you,''
David shows us some powerful tools to help us pass our own tests. Let's learn from his example today and maybe we can find a little peace even while we're on the run.
I. PRAY - SPIRITUAL PEACE
I Samuel 24:1-4 After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, ''David is in the Desert of En Gedi.'' So, Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and set out to look for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats. He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his men were far back in the cave. The men said, ''This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said to you, 'I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.' ''
