Introduction

Last week we spent our time in John 11 just looking at the death of Lazarus. It was a time where we saw how out of His love for humanity, God at times allows suffering and hardship, because above all God demonstrates His love for us in bringing about His own glory and allowing us to share in it. In other words, we saw a biblical portrait of God that, frankly, does not often coincide with the reason of humanity. We saw that God is not some deity who is there at our beckon call to give us whatever we want, like some parent doting on a spoiled child. Instead, God is a perfectly benevolent and wise Father who truly knows what is supremely best for us and, thus, in His love is always bringing that about in and through us.

Shocking to our sensibilities, Jesus allows Lazarus to die in the first half of John 11 because He loves Lazarus, Martha, and Mary. In Jesus' love for this family, He allows their suffering so that they may experience the glory of God to come. And as we discussed last week, that glory is not merely Lazarus' resurrection. The glory rests in the fact that it will be this event which will directly lead to Jesus' crucifixion. Simply put, Out of His love for this family, Jesus allows them to be a part of redemption history and the climax of God's mission.

This morning, thus, we finish this chapter exploring the conversations and emotions leading up to Lazarus' resurrection, the resurrection itself, and the people's response to the resurrection. And in this there will be two key things that we see. First, John 11 gives us a unique glimpse into the heart of God. We receive further articulation into what God's mission is, what Jesus came to do and accomplish.
