INTRODUCTION
David Brooks, the NYT columnist... Recently published a book titled, The Road to Character.
In the book David Brooks explores the lives of about half a dozen leaders that have had a profound impact on the world.
Bayard Rustin
Saint Augustine
Dorothy Day
George Elliot
Frances Perkins
Dwight Eisenhower, and a few others.
He studied the lives of these figures to understand what made them so effective in their time.
He said the one thing they all had in common was humility.
They each understood that what made them effective was not what they did, but who they were. Who they were becoming.
They were humble in their assessment of themselves... And they were humble in the way they served others.
Brooks says that in our time, if we want to develop character and live lives of consequence, we also must cultivate humility.
Pride, ego, and hubris are perhaps the greatest causes of the polarization of our country right now.
He says, we live in a culture of a ''Big-Me.''
We raise our kids to know how great they are.
We use social media to market ourselves.
But what our culture needs, today, more than anything else is humility. We need humble leaders.
When this book was released, it was met with rave reviews. It was seen as counter-cultural.
And I do highly recommend the book...
But the truth is... The Apostle Paul virtually wrote the same book in 60AD... It's called the Letter to the Philippians...
We've been studying this letter for several weeks now... And what we've seen is that Paul says the way to experience joy... Is to give yourself sacrificially for the sake of others.
Remember? The way up... Is Down.
Paul pointed us to Jesus, and said, be like this...
