Series: Philippians - The Journey to Joy

Philippians 1:12-18a
INTRODUCTION
My daughter Edith... Her middle name is Joy.
We gave her this name for two reasons...
First, she is named after Joy Davidman... The feisty New Yorker poet... She also won the heart of C.S. Lewis... She is one of the few intellectual equals of Lewis during his lifetime. He was so frustrated by her wit and her willingness to debate him... And question him... That he married her...
If you know Edith... Her namesake fits her well... She is feisty... Independent... And Lord willing, she will never be intimidated by any man...
But secondly, and most importantly... We wanted Edith's name to be a prophetic blessing over her life... If there is any emotion that I pray would mark my children... It's joy. I want them to know and experience joy.
This is what we all want. This is what we chase. It is what we pursue. We want joy...That contentment of the soul...
The book of Philippians is a letter about how to find joy.
But, if you read this letter closely... You'll see that the journey to joy... Is not the path we expect...
Jesus said, I'm paraphrasing... That most of us think joy is found on a wide straight road... But in reality, we find joy by walking a narrow, crooked road.
The Apostle Paul alludes to a similar, yet different metaphor in this letter... In some ways, it's nonsensical...
But in Philippians, we find that in the journey toward joy... The way UP... Is DOWN.
This explains our graphic that you see on the screen.
The way up... Is down. The way of Jesus flips our entire understanding of how to find joy on its head...
Today's text from Philippians 1... Will help us see, an example of this in the life of the Apostle Paul
