Introduction: What's in a name? Our text raises this question for us-What is in the name of Jesus? The question is not how he got his name, not even what his name signifies. Rather, what is it that makes the name of Jesus powerful?

And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, 2 greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.

Let's review what has happened. Peter and John had performed a miracle by healing a lame man. A crowd gathers, and Peter takes the opportunity to preach. He testifies to the power of Jesus and calls the people to repent and to acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah. John, apparently, also joins in. The men and crowd are in the temple courtyard and the temple authorities with their police force come onto the scene. Note what particularly troubles them. The two apostles were teaching and proclaiming ''in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.'' In Acts we will see that the main opposition party to the apostles are not the Pharisees but the Sadducees. They have double cause to oppose the apostles. Not only would they object to Jesus being brought back into the picture, but that these apostles had the gall to proclaim the truth of the resurrection as demonstrated by Jesus. Unlike the Pharisees who believed in the final resurrection, the Sadducees taught that once you die, you are dead, never to rise.
