I've always enjoyed sports, playing more than watching. I've never claimed to be good at any sport and always played recreationally and not competitively. I picked up on most recreational sports quickly enough to at least enjoy playing them with a group of guys. One sport I never played growing up and have absolutely no aptitude for is basketball. That doesn't mean I did not enjoy trying to play when the guys got together...I just wasn't very good. I was the throw in after the teams had already been picked. You take him.

Since I could not dribble or shoot and was of a rather solid (heavy) build, my role in those pickup games was very basic and limited. Play defense. My team would tell me, ''When you get down here, stay in the paint and be a 'brick wall.' Don't let anybody in this box for an easy shot.'' So, I did what I was told and in the process I heard the opposing team yell foul while pointing my way many times, not that I knew what one was, but they did not get in the paint, knocked on the floor maybe, in the paint...no. My responsibility was simple. Stand firm against a hard charging opponent intent on scoring a goal against my team.

In Ephesians 6, Scripture reveals that as a believer I am engaged in a much more serious contest. Those verses tell me that I am in a spiritual battle against unseen spiritual forces and beings that want to destroy my life, steal my joy and render me ineffective as a follower of Jesus Christ.
