INTRODUCTION: John Wooden may have been the greatest basketball coach in history. His UCLA Bruins won 10 National championships in 12 years and a 62-game winning streak at one point. Wooden was not known for fiery, emotion-filled halftime locker room speeches. What he would typically do at halftime is remind them of some of the ''Woodenisms'' he had taught them throughout their practices:
''Be quick but don't hurry!''
''It's the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen.''
''Talent is God-given. Be humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self-given. Be careful.''
''Winning takes talent, to repeat takes character.''
''Success is never final, failure is never fatal. It's courage that counts.''
''If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?''
He WAS known for coaching that emphasized character. In fact, he called ''coaching'' ''teaching.'' One of Coach Wooden's favorite role models was Mother Teresa, whose quote, ''Unless a life is lived for others, it is not worthwhile,'' served as the bedrock of Coach's lifetime commitment to helping others. Coach Wooden defined team spirit as ''a genuine consideration for others. An eagerness to sacrifice personal interests of glory for the welfare of all.'' Service was built into Wooden's famous ''pyramid of success'' which he taught to all of his players.
Some of you may be wondering, ''Steve, what's with the Jock Jams music? What's with the John Wooden sports quotes?'' I'll tell you. It's called ''half time.'' We're half-way through our calendar year; half way through our building program, half-way through our BHAGS (big holy audacious goals). Our church is in a half-time. And like a sports team at half time we're stepping back to look at where we've been, where we're going, make some adjustments, listen to God's challenge and then get back into the game.
