INTRODUCTION: Vince Lombardi was the head coach of the Green Bay Packers during the 1960s, where he led the team to three straight and five total NFL championships in seven years, in addition to winning the first two Super Bowls at the conclusion of the 1966 and 1967 NFL seasons. Following his -sudden death from cancer in 1970, the NFL Super Bowl trophy was named in his honor. Lombardi is considered by many to be the greatest coach in football history. Some of his motivational sayings include:
''Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can attain excellence.''
''Winners never quit and quitters never win.'' (You've probably used that one on your kids).
''The measure of who we are is in what we do with what we have.''
''The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.''
Vince Lombardi liked to keep it simple. He said, ''Some people try to find things in this game that don't exist but football is only two things - blocking and tackling.'' In Super Bowl II against the Raiders, Lombardi guaranteed his team a victory if they just focused on the fundamentals.
I'm in a sermon series called ''half time.'' We're half-way through our calendar year; half way through our building program, half-way through our BHAGS (big holy audacious goals). Our church is in a half-time. And like a sports team at half time we're stepping back and reviewing the fundamentals.
We're preaching through a ''half-time'' passage in the Bible as well, based upon Jesus appearance to the apostles by the Sea of Galilee recorded in John 21. This incident takes place at ''half-time'' in a manner of speaking because it's in between the Old and New Testaments. It's in between Jesus' resurrection and ascension.
