Halftime Love (4 of 6)
Series: Halftime
Steve Jones
John 21
INTRODUCTION: Much of Mark Richt's life has revolved around football as he has been playing or coaching the sport since the late 70's. The vast majority of his career has been spent at Florida State and as the head coach at Georgia, where he won SEC Coach of the Year twice. he now finds himself the head coach of his alma mater, the University of Miami. In a September '17 interview about his faith and his coaching philosophy Richt said the following: ''We as people are searching for answers to life: 'Why do I exist?'. I believe God created us, loves us, wants a relationship with us. He loved us enough to allow his son to die for our sin. When your heart changes then you start doing things out of love rather than because you have to.''
I'm in a sermon series called ''half time.'' We're half-way through our calendar year; half way through our building program, half-way through our BHAGS (big holy audacious goals). Our church is in a half-time. And like a sports team at half time we're stepping back to review the fundamentals.
We're preaching through a ''half-time'' passage in the Bible as well, based upon Jesus appearance to the apostles by the Sea of Galilee recorded in John 21. This incident takes place at ''half-time'' in a manner of speaking because it's in between the Old and New Testaments. It's in between Jesus' resurrection and ascension. It's in between the end of physical, national Israel and the beginning of ''spiritual Israel'' the church (Acts 2). It's in between the feast of Passover and the feast of Pentecost. It's in between ''The Twelve'' as disciples and the beginning of the twelve as Apostles. In this ''half-time'' passage coach Jesus seeks to inspire team Jesus for what's ahead and call them back to the fundamentals. We have seen the challenge to proactivity, service, and fellowship. Today I want us to think about the challenge to love.
