A Life of Devotion (2 of 3)
Series: It's Not Over

John 19:25
In this sermon series, we are highlighting the encounters Jesus had with a few individuals after His resurrection. Last week we talked about the two on the Road to Emmaus and how Jesus is revealed in the scriptures, in the breaking of bread, and in the Holy Spirit. This week we are talking about Mary Magdalene. If there is one word that characterizes Mary's life, it is DEVOTION. Webster defines Devotion as the fact or state of being ardently dedicated and loyal.
Mary Magdalene was there for Jesus all the way through the cross, she was the one who went to the tomb with the spices for Jesus' burial. and she was the first to receive Him after His resurrection. Here are the three references for this truth:
John 19:25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. Here is the Key verse for today's message.
Mark 16:9 Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons.
From this verse alone, we can derive a few things:
1. Her name being Mary Magdalene means that she is from Magdala. (Just like Jesus was called the Nazarene from Nazareth, Mary is the Magdalene from Magdala). Magdala was a thriving, populous town on the coast of Galilee about three miles from Capernaum. Dye works and primitive textile factories added to the wealth of the community. It may be that ''The Magdalene'' was connected with the industry of the town for it would seem as if she was not without means, enabling her to serve the Lord with her substance.
2. She HAD seven demons that Jesus cast out of her. Luke 8:1 Now it came to pass, afterward, that He went through every city and village, preaching and bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him, 2 and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities--Mary c ...
