What's the biggest risk you've ever taken? While you're thinking about that I'll tell you a little story about a kid from my youth group named Steve Gulley.

Steve was an elder's son and he stood around 6'2'' and weighed over 250 pounds. He joined the military and signed to play football at Virginia Military Institute (his father played with Johnny Unitas at Louisville). Steve was quiet, polite and a straight-A student.

The day after his eighteenth birthday, he stopped by the church to tell me about his first adult decision: he parachuted! Steve told me every detail and he finished by saying, ''It was the coolest thing I've ever done!'' (I thought my baptizing him was pretty cool, but apparently, I didn't make the cut.)

When I saw Lloyd, his father, on Sunday his version of the story was altogether different! Lloyd didn't seem too pleased when I asked about the parachuting and he let his opinion be known without blinking: ''It was the stupidest thing he's ever done in his life!'' Parachuting was a risky event Lloyd wanted other elder's sons to do.

In the early 90s I spent a week at Berry College in Rome, GA when I was with Chic-fil-A. I joined 18 other franchise operators to learn the value of team. It started out easy and built up: we walked across a telephone pole about 20' in the air with a harness on. Another exercise resembled an obstacle course, and even though the picture on the screen seems complicated, there was a pattern we followed. And a few of us tried jumping from the top of a telephone pole to a trapeze bar! My knees shook so badly that telephone pole started shaking and I nearly fell!

But the most frightening activity required an 85' climb straight up a tree (with a harness on). My partner was Guy Parks and Guy was from St. Louis. He was a ''big 'ole boy, even bigger than me (he weighed 300 lbs). Once you reached the top ...
