The Law of Sowing and Reaping
Jerry Watts
Galatians 6:7-9
Of all the principles taught in God's word, the one we are going to look at today is the ONE that should impact us in South Mississippi as much or more than any other in all of scripture. This is the one that should be second nature to us in rural America. It is the Biblical law of ''Sowing and Reaping''. We know about this law because of what happens in our fields and flowerbeds.
This is an immutable, irrevocable, and irreversible law of God which applies equally to everyone. While we know this is true and have accepted this law in agriculture, it seems we have missed it or dismissed it from the rest of life. As students, we study a 'little' and then are surprised when our grade is not what we want (this law), at work, we give less than our best effort and are shocked when we are passed over (this law), in our marriage, we give the very minimal efforts and affection to our spouse and then are stunned when the relationship starts to crumble. Applying this law to our culture (both community and church) may expose why people have now left the church in droves and, at the same time, may surprise us. Today, consider this law for your life and church.
LET's READ our text. In his book 7 Habits of Highly effective people, Steven Covey, gives as habit #2 the essence of the law of sowing and reaping. He says, ''Begin with the end in mind.'' Every farmer or gardener who begins preparing their soil has an idea of what they want to happen. They know what fruit they want to produce or what flowers they want to see when the blooming season comes. Each and every action they take is for the purpose of their fruit or flowers. In other words, they know the harvest they desire.
Now, let's consider this law in light of life. It is one thing to know it, another thing to believe it, and an entirely different thing to embrace it. When we embrace something we receive it, we welcome it, adopt it, and live by it.
