Introduction: Over the last nine months as we've been walking through John's gospel it's understandable, I think, if you've found yourself getting increasingly frustrated by this story. I believe that's what John wants us to be feeling. I mean, come on, how can these people keep seeing what their seeing and, yet, not see?! Right? A while back I was meeting with some college students and as we were discussing John's gospel one of them asked me, ''Well, how else could the Jewish leaders have explained what Jesus was doing? I mean, how could Jesus do what He was doing unless He was who He said He was?'' I said, ''Man, that's the point.''

Right, like back in chapter 8 we saw them argue that Jesus must have demonic power, only that could explain how He was doing what He was doing. Of course, such an explanation didn't seem to really convince anyone as we see the Pharisees abandon this argument quite quickly. But as we continue to see this morning in John 9, no matter what Jesus said and did the Jewish leaders refused to even consider the possibility that Jesus actually was who He was claiming to be. It's really quite frustrating!

Now, at the same time, it's not that uncommon, though, right? I mean, come on, human beings tend to be quite close-minded. When was the last time you heard of any debate or discussion being had where someone actually changed their mind? I can't think of any! Instead, what seems to be the most common form of ''discussion'' these days is just to keep repeating one's opinion in louder and louder decibels, meanwhile throwing in a few disparaging remarks and character attacks along the way. In other words, it's human nature, it seems, to have one's views and be completely unwilling to consider anything different.

Of course, though, in the gospel we're talking about much more than just gun control or immigration. We're talking about the incarnate Son of God. Moreove ...
