Open your bible to 1 Cor. 16. As we are on the cusp of ending the book of 1 Corinthians, we are going to look at one verse this morning about how every follower of Jesus should live. That verse is

1 Corinthians 16:13: ''Be on your guard, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong.''

I want to read that again, and I want you to pretend that you are a soldier on the frontlines of a war getting instructions from your sergeant, ok? Be on your guard, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong.

Paul isn't telling the Corinthians how to be Christians; he's reminding them of how to live the Christian life. If this sounds like military language to you it's only because it is. Scripture says every Christian has, by the grace of God, been made both a saint and a soldier. When God put salvation in your heart, He also put a sword in your hand.

If you were a kid who went to VBS, you probably learned a song called ''I'm in the Lord's Army''. Right? March in the infantry, Ride in the cavalry, Shoot the artillery, I may never fly o'er the enemy. But I'm in the Lord's army! Yes Sir! It's not just a song; it's the truth. 2 Timothy 2:3 says, ''You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.'' Every Christian is a soldier at war. I'm not talking about the Iraqi War, or the democrat/republican war, or the Cub/Cardinal war. I'm taking about a war that's invisible, yet very, very real. Most of your problems, most of your hurts, most of your sin, most of your confusion, most of your frustration in life have their roots deep in this war. The war I'm talking about, of course, is the cosmic clash between the Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of the Devil, the kingdom of light and the kingdom of Darkness, and you are not just in the middle of it, you are the battleground on which this fight takes place.
