Philippians 4:8-9


Take out your Bibles to Philippians 4. In verses 8-9, the Apostle Paul shows us that if we're going to have a joyful heart, we must have a beautiful mind. What is a beautiful mind?

A beautiful mind is a mind that is surrendered to God's Spirit; filled with and guarded by God's Word. I'm sure most of you have hear this little saying:

Sow a thought, reap an action. Sow an action, reap a habit.

Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap a destiny.

Where does it all begin? With a tiny, invisible, seemingly insignificant thought. That little thought becomes an action, which becomes part of your regular routine, which forms into a habit. Habits become so engrained in you that they develop your character, which help shape your identity.

We've been told repeatedly that physically you are what you eat. The food you input into your body is your fuel and affects the output of your body and what it can do. Physically you are what you eat. Mentally, emotionally, and spiritually you are what you think. You are the product of your thought life. As someone has said: You are not what you think you are; but what you think-you are.

Solomon, the wisest man ever, put it like this in Pro. 23:7: 'As a man thinks in his heart so is he.''

There was an old commercial that said, ''The mind is a terrible thing to waste.'' Former vice president Dan Quayle tried to quote that little sentence in a speech one time and messed it up by saying, 'The mind is a terrible thing to lose.' Ha!! Both are true, aren't they? The mind is a terrible thing to waste and to lose. Jesus tells us that the greatest commandment in the whole world is that you are to love God with all of your heart, all of your soul, and all of your mind. Whatever you give your mind to you give your life to and your love to.
