Philippians 3:1-6

Let's open our bibles to Philippians 3. Today we start the second half of this God-inspired, life changing book that is gorged with truth on how to live a joy-filled life. Joy is one of the evidences the God of heaven is living within you. God doesn't just prefer us to be joyful; He commands it. It's one of the ways we shine bright for Christ in a dark world.

Amazingly, the Apostle Paul didn't write this book when he was on vacation in the Caribbean. He was in prison in Rome, waiting to be executed. In the darkest days of his life, he wrote the most uplifting book in the Bible.

You see, it's one thing to understand what joy is. It's another thing to experience joy because some nice things are happening to you. But it's a whole other level of living when you can continually be joyful even when life isn't being very kind to you. In the first two chapters, Paul mainly focused on our BELIEFS. In the second two chapters, he will zero in on our BEHAVIOR. Right beliefs and right behavior are the key to experiencing and maintaining the joy of the Lord.

This week I read some interesting stats on what Americans spend their money on. Last year alone Americans spent:

$4.8 billion on Cheetos and Doritos

$60 billion on dog and cat food

$80 billion on lottery tickets

$500 million on golf balls

$2.3 billion on tattoos

$80 million on tattoo removal (buyer's remorse?)

$90 billion on smartphone apps

$500 million on Twinkies (which I think are worth every penny)

We would all agree that's a lot of money. But those numbers pale in comparison when we put them up against what we spend on defending and protecting ourselves and our country. Last year:

$611 billion dollars U.S. national defense (more than China, Saudi Arabia, Russia, United Kingdom,

India, France, and Japan combined.)

$100 billion for law enforcement in U.S.

$46 billion for Homeland security ...
