God wants us to trust his promises without doubting him.

When God told Gideon, he was to lead the nation of Israel into battle against the Midianites he was afraid and asked God for a sign. He asked for the fleece to be wet and the ground dry. Not convinced of that one sign he asked for another, that the fleece be dry and the ground wet (Judges 6:36-40).

John Calvin - ''Signs are generally intended to aid our weakness.'' God wants us to trust His Word which contains his promises.

Psalm 145:13 NIV The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises. Puritian Timothy Cruso - ''The being of God may as well fail as the promises of God. Promises, thought they be for a time seemingly delayed, cannot be finally frustrated.''

When God says something, we can count on it to happen.

Joshua 23:14 After the people were settle in the Promised Land Joshua said to them, ''Not one word has failed of all the good things that the Lord your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed.''

PROMISE CONFIRMED :7-8 Sign :7

II Kings 20:8-11 give us the details of the sign which the Lord gave Hezekiah that he would be healed and go to the temple.

Why would he want a sign when he had been promised healing? Why didn't he just believe the promise of God Isaiah gave him? Because he did believe in God and had walked faithfully with him he probably asked for a sign because Isaiah had told him he would not recover (:1) and just a few minutes later he came back and said he would live another 15 years (:5).

Clearly both statements could not be true and therefore he wanted a sign from to know if he would be healed and live 15 more years. Sign - would authenticate the prophetic message of God's promise. He had told Hezekiah's father, the ungodly King Ahaz, God would give him a sign, ''The virgin shall conceive and bear a son (7:14).''
