Theme: ''The showdown at sea between Jonah and God''

The story of Jonah is very confrontational and a war of wills, the revealed will of God and the rebellious will of Jonah. I was thinking about the scenario that plays out in the days of the ''Wild West.'' The ''Showdown at Sunset'' or the ''Battle at Bighorn'' where the two opposing sides meet for an all out battle of wills to see who is victorious.

I came across a book, ''Oh What a Slaughter: Massacres in the American West 1846 - 1890'' by Larry McMurtry. In the book, the author discusses the numerous massacres that occurred in the days of the ''American Wild West.''

One of the massacres that caught my attention is called ''The Mountain Meadow Massacre of 1857'' which occurred on September 11th, 1857. On this day there was the brutal massacre of 120 men, women, and children over the age of seven. On this day in American history we read about the orchestrated massacre of 120 Arkansas immigrants as they were traveling from Arkansas to California. The leader of the Mormon Church was Brigham Young and at his bidding there was a plot put into action to massacre and entire wagon train of travelers as they entered into the southwestern portion of Utah.

I do not have the time to get into all of the details as to the reason for this massacre, but it was unwarranted and many were guilty, though hardly any of the Mormon's had to answer for their evil deeds. The Mormon's begin to send in men by horseback and they were instructed to kill everyone over the age of seven years old.
