Daniel 5
Last week, in chapter 4, we saw proud king confronted with his pride who eventually repents and turns away from his pride, and is restored. This week in Daniel 5, see opposite of that. In chapter 5 we will see proud king continues in his pride, who doesn't turn from it, and is judged.
What we will see with king in chapter 5 what I'd like to call a prideful confidence. Being confident isn't a bad thing. To want to look at your life and say, ''Okay, I got this. I can make it. I have made it.'' That's basic confidence you need to go to school, date someone, get married to someone, get a life.
It's PRIDEFUL confidence that's dangerous. Prideful confidence is kind of confidence that says, ''I'm okay, I got this ALL BY MYSELF.'' It's to say, ''I can make it ON MY OWN.'' ''I have made it ON MY OWN!''
Do you see the shift there? Prideful confidence you see is really implicit rejecting of our need for our God and our dependence on God for everything.
And what learn today is that this kind of prideful confidence against God will always be judged by God.
Prideful confidence against God will ALWAYS be judged by God. Really, chapter 5 is last phrase of 4:37 coming true - ''those who walk in pride [God] is able to humble.''
So let's get into Daniel 5. Bit of time jump between chapter 4 and 5. Nebuchadazzar, the father of mighty Babylonian empire, has long gone. And in fact, several kings have come and gone by time we get to chapter 5. About 20 years later. Belshazzar is king. And when we meet up with him, he's having a party!
We see the details of it in v.1-4. [Daniel 5:1-4 - 1 King Belshazzar made a great feast for a thousand of his lords and drank wine in front of the thousand. 2 Belshazzar, when he tasted the wine, commanded that the vessels of gold and of silver that Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple in Jerusalem be brought, that the king and his lords, his wives, and ...
