Dealing with Your Shame (Repentance) (4 of 7)
Series: Emotions and The Psalm

Psalm 51; 2 Samuel 11-12
INTRODUCTION: Years ago, when I was in college... I had my share of what some might call, ''my fun.''Parties, stupid decisions... All of that. But when I was Sophomore, I had some godly men befriend me. And they spoke truth into my life... And they helped me regain my faith. And I had a real spiritual revival. Became passionate about the Scriptures. I was sharing the gospel with track teammates, and fraternity brothers... Guys were coming to Christ. It was amazing.
But I still wrestled with some of the demons of my past. And one night, for reasons I can't remember... I fell back into some old habits... I went out, and did some things I thought I had left behind. I woke up the next morning... With a splitting headache... And a crushing weight of shame. I felt like I had blown it. All of this ministry I was doing. Everyone knew I was Christian now. I was turning my life around. Then, in front of everyone... I went back to the ''Old Will.''
In the solitude of my bedroom.. I remember siting on my floor and thinking.... ''I've blown it,'' I thought. ''What's wrong with ME?'' ''How can I call myself a Xian now?'' SHAME.
This is what I want to talk about today.... Shame....
What is shame? People often confuse guilt and shame... Or they just assume they are the same things...
Guilt and Shame and two different emotions.
Guilt is felt over something you've done.
Shame, however, is a felt about who you are.
Guilt is ''I made a mistake.''
Shame is ''I am a mistake.''
?This morning, we're at Psalm 51. David wrote this Psalm after he had committed adultery with Bathsheba... She became pregnant... In an attempt to cover his tracks... He killed her husband.
He tried to bottle up the shame for a while... But when he was rebuke by a friend...The shame rushed over him... He was overcome not only with guilt.... But with shame.
