The Bible's Beauty
Robert Dawson
2 Timothy 3:14-17
It was 1995 and I was tired of being single with no prospect for love and marriage, so I decided it was time to find me a woman. I hopped into my silver Dodge Dakota pick-up truck and went wife shopping in town.
But I wanted more than just a pretty face, so I determined it was important for me to learn more about her. I got some basic information, make, model, VIN number and sent it in for a certified wife check. I also called the F.B.I, C.I.A as well as the state and local authorities to find out if she had a criminal record. I didn't want to marry an axe murderer, drug dealer, thief or spy.
Since we were going to be spending the rest of our lives together I wanted more than just her legal information. I needed information of a more personal nature, so I sent questionnaires to her family and friends. I also interviewed her high school principal and college dean and requested a copy of her transcripts. I did not want to marry a dummy. One in the family was plenty.
After examining the material and weighing the options I went to the pawn shop bought a ring and asked her to marry me. That's how it happened right? That's how you did it?
NO!! Like most people we spent time together - since it was a semi-long-distance relationship, between here and Atlanta. That meant there was a lot of time spent on the phone just listening to each other breath (when you are in your early 20's there's not a whole lot of life to talk about).
I got to know her, not through secondary information but first-hand information. Those other things may have been useful, though I don't believe the relationship would have ever progressed had I done them, they were of a secondary nature. I spent time with her and learned who she was and made a commitment to her because I knew her personally.
Amazingly, when it comes to our relationship with and knowledge of God many believers settle on second hand information.
