Checking One’s Record

I will never forget having to go to work one morning around 12:00 A.M. and as I was returning home I came upon a four-way stop in the middle of nowhere. I slowed down to nearly a crawl, and then I looked in all directions and rolled through the stop sign. There were not any lights for as far as I could see, so I felt very secure in slowly rolling through the “suggestive” stop sign. I traveled about a half a mile and suddenly a blue light begin to flash in my rearview mirror. I was literally shocked to think that I was “being pulled over.”

I pulled over after crossing into the next county and pulling into someone’s driveway. The officer approached my car and I said, “I wasn’t speeding was I officer.” He smirked and told me that I had run the stop sign and I was not a happy camper. I knew that I had run the stop sign but I had justified it by declaring that nobody was around and it did not really matter. I could not believe that the officer didn’t have anything better to do than harass someone working, surely he could find someone that was really breaking the law.

I went to the local magistrate court in the county where I worked and they told me I could pay a fine of $75.00 and it would not go on my insurance. I was happy with this conclusion and I was not going to tell my wife, especially since it was not going to be on my insurance. Just a few weeks later, I was pulled over for speeding in the same county and ended up going to the same magistrate judge and was given the same option of paying $75.00 and not having it show up on my insurance.
