Luke 5:12-16
12 And it happened when He was in a certain city, that behold, a man who was full of leprosy saw Jesus; and he fell on his face and implored Him, saying, ''Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.'' 13 Then He put out His hand and touched him, saying, ''I am willing; be cleansed.'' Immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And He charged him to tell no one, ''But go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as a testimony to them, just as Moses commanded.'' 15 However, the report went around concerning Him all the more; and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities. 16 So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.
We have to be careful when we talk about miracles. Sometimes we call something a miracle that may or may not be one. Let's consider some rules for miracles this morning:
1- It has to be observable. No miracles in the New Testament were done in secret. Witnesses were either permitted to see the actual event or the after effects of the healing.
2- It has to be something that only God can do. In other words, a miracle cannot be logically explained away. Even today, in an era of advanced medical enlightenment, leprosy or Hanson's disease still cannot be cured.
3- It has to arise to the level of the miracles in the New Testament. Calling anything and everything a miracle only serves to cheapen a truly miraculous event.
Everyone in the New Testament who got to share in a miraculous event experienced a touch from heaven. Don't we all need one occasionally? I know I do. Look at several things we need to know this morning for receiving one.
