The Simple Truth About Forgiveness (3 of 15)
Series: What to Preach When You Don't Know What to Preach
Richard Bradley
1 John 1:9
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.NKJV
While some of the great issues of life seem complex they are often fairly simple. We sometimes confuse ourselves by making things more complex than they should be. For instance, while admittedly some biblical doctrines are hard to explain many are actually quite simple. We would think the matter of salvation would be complex yet Acts 16:31 reveals its simplicity. When the Philippian jailer asked Paul how he could be saved he responded, ''Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.''
I ask you, what could be simpler than that? This morning let's look at another biblical doctrine that we've made far too complex; the biblical doctrine of forgiveness. The question is, how can we, as believers, be sure our sins have been forgiven so we can be in fellowship with God? It's important to understand that today's verse is not for unbelievers. This verse if for believers only. The forgiveness of I John 1:9 does not bring salvation, it enables us to maintain our fellowship with God.
Look at what John said about the simplicity of forgiveness.

According to verse 9 the responsibility for seeking forgiveness lies totally with the one who requires it. Sometimes in Scripture small words like ''if'' carry great meaning. Some years ago our nation had a president that wanted us to debate over the meaning of the word ''is.'' At the very least, that was insulting. We all know what ''is'' means. Additionally, we all know what ''if'' means. This word is the beginning of a conditional clause that leads to God's forgiveness.
