31 So they said, ''Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.''

There are those who believe our salvation is a very complex matter when actually it's quite simple. God made it simple for two reasons:

(1)- So we could all understand it;
(2)- So anyone could be saved.

Because of the simplicity of the gospel we don't have to have a degree after our names to enjoy eternal life. Vance Havner once said he felt the happiest person on earth was a brand new Christian before he met too many Bible scholars. Unfortunately, theologians tend to complicate the truly simple and sometimes put a theological twist on the saying, ''Can't see the forest for the trees.''

Look with me this morning at how truly simple the gospel message is. When the Philippian jailor asked Paul and Silas how he could be saved they gave him one of the simplest explanations in all the Bible.

THE SIMPLE REQUIREMENT OF SALVATION

31 So they said, ''Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.''

Salvation requires that we believe. What exactly does this mean? This word ''to believe'' means ''to have faith in'' or to ''entrust oneself to.'' Salvation is all about trusting the Lord to keep a promise He's made to us. A promise is only as good as the one making it. When we take out a loan we sign a promissory note promising to pay it back. The bank has to determine whether or not it can trust us to make good on that promise. If they trust us we get the money.

The gospel's simple question is, ''Are you willing to trust God's promise of salvation?'' God will keep His promise. He will save you but not unless you trust Him.
