Hebrews 12:1-2
1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. NKJV
Before we can get to the joy of the resurrection we must first discuss the agony of the cross. We all know about the cross. In Jesus' day the cross was the favored method of Roman execution. It certainly got their point across. The crucified individual's crime was recorded and nailed to the top of the cross for everyone to see. The object lesson was obvious: ''If you do something like what this guy did the same thing will happen to you.''
Too many preachers at this time of the year choose to do an almost forensic analysis of Jesus' death on the cross. No doubt He died in agony but I feel the reason He went to the cross is much more important. Because we could not save ourselves Jesus provided us with a means of regaining fellowship with the Father. Because of the cross Heaven can be our home and God Almighty can be our heavenly Father.
The message of the cross is quite simple. There is nothing complex about what Jesus did that day on a hill named Golgotha.
THE SIMPLE MESSAGE OF THE CROSS IS THAT JESUS IS THE AUTHOR AND FINISHER OF OUR FAITH
